The pharmaceutical giant Johnson & Johnson could be facing a more costly problem than the $3 billion recall of its ASR all-metal artificial hips two years ago.
A replacement product to ASR, the Pinnacle metal-on-metal hip system, has nearly 1,600 lawsuits pending in U.S. courts. It is expected that more than 10 percent of the Pinnacle all-metal hips will have failed in the next two to three years.
Metal-on-metal hip implants were developed in the belief that they would be more durable than those made of other materials (i.e., polyethylene or ceramic). And it was hoped the metal-on-metal would function well for up to 15 years.
Since the FDA warning on these implants – fewer than 10% of all orthopedic surgeons are now using the metal-on-metal products.
For many patients, the issues with the Pinnacle metal-on-metal devices are identical to those issues produced by the ASR product: pain and swelling, limited mobility, and dislocation – in addition to metallosis caused by cobalt and chromium entering the bloodstreams of the patients receiving the implants.
Many doctors are refusing to use the metal-on-metal implants for fear of the metal poisoning alone.
