Sadly – corporate power and corporate greed.
We have written much on this topic… about companies making choices that ignore dangerous safety issues in an effort to protect profits.
Let’s look at car accidents again. They occur for may reasons – including driver error.
But how about car accidents caused by defective equipment – equipment known by manufacturers to be dangerous and yet sold any way. All with the knowledge of company leaders…
Take the recent problems with GM and ignition switches known for a decade by GM engineers and legal staff to be the cause of catastrophic car accidents.
Now we learn that GM not only knew it was selling cars with defective ignition switches that could and did cause scores of deadly accidents – they pressured the maker of that part, Delphi, to keep producing it.
And just recently, we learned that Takata – the manufacturer of air bags used in Fords, Hondas, Chryslers, Mazdas and BMWs knew of serious problems with their airbag systems and told engineers to cover up their findings. And again, deaths occurred as a result of the company’s quest for profits. Honda is now acknowledging it failed to alert safety regulators about the problems with the airbags as well. Why?
Problems with companies choosing profit over safety are as old as man. Luckily, people like Ralph Nader and our founders Bill Davis and Leon RisCassi decided to fight back. In part, thanks to those individuals, we now have a legal system that’s a counter-balance to corporate power, giving consumers the ability to protect their rights and their safety.
